This article were reposted from another website which I written back in 10th February 2018 entitled ‘The Man Behind The Camera’.

Film+Digital

Recalled back in the days when I was a child in the early 2000s, I still do remember clearly the first time, maybe not, I was on a trip to the national zoo shooting pictures with a splash proof digital film camera made by Olympus back then. The pictures were still well kept with me, walking around the zoo to shoot pictures of animals and live performances was fun, but it mean nothing to me at that young age. I think I wasted a few exposures, but no one cares, I guess?

Everlasting Memories

When years past, we are able to observe a big leap in technologies transformation, and had been getting more and more advance and even more powerful than before. As far as I’m consent, my younger days was captured with joy and laughter through the lens of every camera. All thanks to my family members who fortunate enough to buy a camera to take pictures and appreciate their photographic works, so that it could preserved till today. What happened in our past were memories that never come again, appreciate and love ourselves and the one besides us. It might be our memories in the future too.

First DSLR

After being an ordinary child as it would be and living quietly for nearly a decade, something miracle just happened. In 2009, my father got himself his first digital single lens reflex camera, he was so excited that he could join his friends around him taking pictures of landscapes, macros and birds. Meanwhile, he also needs someone to assist him in taking up a new hobby. That’s why I was introduced to photography the same year, it was a life changing experience since then. Whenever he attends courses and talks, I’ll always be with him as a son and also an assistant. Whatever he did not understand from the lectures, he will either questions me, or we will solve the problems together. We knew nothing much about photography at that time, no matter right or wrong, trying an error is the best policy to achieve for the best result.

Hand in hand, we started at the same point, gone through all obstacles and experiences, and ended up in different specialisation. He is now a bird watcher cum photographer. His bond with nature had brought him traveling around the country to search and capture the very best moments of the common birds as well as the rare ones. I even followed him for a few attempts to the forest to discover the beauties. He always tells me that if he wants to get a good picture with ambient and soft lighting, the best is arrived at the spot at dawn to setup all his equipment. When I enter into the forest, it just made me feels like I am in the Isle of Innisfree as described by Y. B. Yeats in his poem. As peaceful as it is, the environment is packed with foliage, morning dew drops, misty fresh air, babbling of the stream, humming of insects and chirping of birds. The feeling is just like sitting in the philharmonic orchestra hall enjoying every seconds of melody of nature. Unfortunately, I did not follow my father’s footsteps not because I dislike it, but I could not find time to join him since I am working with a foreign company based in the overseas. If there is an opportunity, I’d really want join him to the nature once more.

Globetrotters

As for me, I am just an ordinary photographer who loves taking pictures. However, I am keen in traveling around the country, across the globe in search for my favourite frames which is unique that represents me. No matter rain or shine, cheerful or desperate, I will always capture the moment by expressing my feelings through pictures. Photographing is like composing an essay, plotting out the header, content and lastly footer, every pictures speak a thousand words. Don’t limit yourself in a box, think creative and jump out of your comfort zone to capture more!

Penghu, Taiwan, is more than just an archipelago surrounded by the vast blue sea; for me, it is a tapestry woven with cherished memories and formative experiences. From the carefree days of adolescence to the pivotal moments of young adulthood, Penghu shaped me in ways I continue to treasure.

As a teenager, I was captivated by Penghu’s natural beauty. The sweeping beaches, unique basalt formations, and the ever-present salty sea breeze created a backdrop that felt both grounding and inspiring. Life in Penghu fostered a deep appreciation for simplicity, community, and nature—values that became the foundation of my personal growth.

Penghu was also home to my alma mater, a place that taught me more than just academic lessons. It was within those walls that I first explored my passions, formed lifelong friendships, and discovered my potential. The challenges I faced, both in the classroom and beyond, helped me develop resilience and confidence. My educators, peers, and the supportive environment shaped my ambitions and gave me the courage to dream beyond the shores of our beloved island.

As I transitioned from a teenager to a young adult, Penghu taught me about the strength of community. The island’s close-knit nature emphasized the importance of relationships and collective responsibility. Whether it was participating in local festivals or simply greeting neighbors with a smile, Penghu instilled a sense of belonging that I carry with me wherever I go.

Though life may take me far from Penghu, it will always be my anchor—a reminder of where I came from and the experiences that shaped me into the person I am today. The memories of my journey, from my alma mater’s lessons to the sunsets over the ocean, remain a part of my identity, a testament to the island’s enduring influence.

In 2017, I had the privilege of donating a few of my photography masterpieces to my university library in Penghu. At the time, the photos were humbly displayed in a quiet corner, a space that felt intimate yet fitting for the beginnings of my artistic journey. Those photographs, inspired by the island’s unparalleled beauty, were my way of giving back to the place that nurtured me—an offering of gratitude to the institution and community that had shaped so much of my life.

Recently, when I returned to Penghu, I was surprised and deeply moved to find those same photographs now exhibited in the university’s main gallery. The sight filled me with pride and nostalgia, as it symbolized how far both my work and my journey had come. Standing in that gallery, I felt a profound connection between my past and present, as if my younger self, the one who wandered Penghu’s shores with a camera, was there with me.

The experience was more than just a personal achievement—it was a reminder of the enduring bond I share with Penghu and my alma mater. Knowing that my work resonated with others enough to be placed in a prominent space reaffirmed the significance of my roots and the power of art to capture and preserve the soul of a place.

This moment was not just a testament to the growth of my craft but also to the enduring legacy of Penghu’s influence. The island, with its tranquil beauty and tight-knit community, continues to inspire and guide me. I left the gallery that day feeling grateful, humbled, and ever more connected to the home that raised me and the alma mater that believed in me.
